Hi Folks; It's been a long while since I dropped in, but things have settled down (at last) & I'm back into the shop full time again. A customer recently brought me a 1965 Patt Lister Classical guitar that's in need of major repair. The repairs are going well, but I am having trouble finding new tuners to fit the 1.5" post spacing. All of the current production tuners seem to have 1.378" spacing. I have ordered a set of individual Shertlers that'll do the job, but they will look out of place on this old instrument. Does anyone know where I can find some good quality tuners with the right spacing? Thanks in advance. Dan |

38.1mm spacing is going to be tough to come by. I've never seen any but seem to recall reading a similar question to yours once before. I think Gotoh makes tuners with 39mm spacing. You'll probably have to look around or special order, though. You might check to see if those would work. Edit: Just did a quick search and found the Gotoh's here (again, don't know if they'll work): http://savageclassical.com/shop/gotoh-4 ... -machines/ |

You might consider Gilbert individual tuners also. A very good tuner, not as non-traditional looking as the shertler, but some don't care for the aesthetics. |

Thanks guys! I lucked into a set of almost identical tuners from a friend who's been carting them around for almost 40 years. Luckily, he bought two sets back in the early seventies & didn't mind parting with one set. Problem solved. This is a really unique old guitar. Designed & built by an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer who threw out traditional bracing methods & applied his aircraft structural expertise to the bracing. The braces are 1/16" thick & 5/8" tall, radiating out from the soundhole. The braces are jointed to 1/16" thick rings spaced concentrically out from the soundhole. Very light & extremely stiff. Apparently, Segovia played this guitar during a master class he held in Toronto in '66 & was very impressed with it. The owner has a picture of Segovia posing with the students in the class. If I can get a good pic of the bracing, I'll post it once the repairs are finished. Cheers! Dan |

Sergei de Jonge worked with Pat for a time ... he'd be a good source of information on Lister guitars if you have further questions. |

I know your problem is solved, but for future information, Rubner, in Germany will make tuners for any spacing you want. You'll pay a premium for them, but their machines are reasonably priced, and a premium set will still be less than lots of other machines, and you can get the special spacing or 5 on a side, what ever you want. |
