Post subject:  Curly Maple - finished

This was meant to be finished for christmas but the giver decided to save it for her sons jan. birthday instead. I am very pleased with this one. it was started about 9 months ago and had a couple finished in front of it. But it was #3 started so thats what i put on the label. Curly maple back sides and neck, bocote fb and head plate and osage orange /bocote binding. The top is sitka spruce with bocote/osage rosette. I wasnt sure what sound to expect from maple. I was told to expect a bright sound. Only been playing this for a few days but it sounds alot like the walnut guitar i made before this one. Its does have bright clear highs but the lows notes seem full and clear without being tin-y. My wife thinks the white of the maple is to dull but i love the curl and flame althrough the guitar. Also the back plates had some spalting show up when i re-sawed the lumber it came from so incorporated in. I cant wait to start the next one.

I like the blonde, that neck is beautiful. How did the Osage bindings bend?

Thx for the kind words. Btw, osage bends like no other wood . Hackberry bends well also but who knows if that make good tone wood. I have made recurve bows with osage for years, it will amke a pretzel if you want it to.

Congrats Tony! I think it was Fred who mentioned that the great thing about getting one guitar done, is you can start another!

Maple responds really well to varnish to get a nice colour.

Varnish...... I was considering amber tinted shellac. Im guessing varnish will give it a more natural darker coloring. Ill have to remember that.
