I have had a request to build a Nick Lucas style guitar based on the Gibson 1929 L1. Does anyone have any drawings or plans or know where I can get them? Thanks much. |

Not plans, but this site is a great source for info on vintage Gibsons: http://home.provide.net/~cfh/gibson6.html Glenn |

The guild of American Luthiers sells a plan, it isn't X braced, but that shouldn't be too hard to change if you wanted to. http://luth.org/images/plans/pl06.jpg |

I'm working on drawing plans for a Nick Lucas Special. I've got enough info to get the size & shape right, but I don't have anything on the bracing. I had planned on winging it. ![]() edit: I've also commited to draw L-5 plans, the shape is already done for the 17" version. |

Thanks for the info. I had forgotten the GAL plan. I will order that and use it for my body template. I will probably go with Gibson style X bracing, although there is an L1 listed on the folkway site with interesting late 1928 - 9 pre X bracing. http://www.folkwaymusic.com/oldmuseum/g ... llery.html It is about 2/3s of the way through the listings. As I get into the build, I will post the progress. |

Todd, By '28 you mean the one with the rounded lower bout & '29 you mean the one with the flattened lower side of the lower bout? Google images is giving some inconsistent results. Kevin Looker |

According to this site, the body shape changed after '29: http://home.provide.net/~cfh/gibson6.html Glenn |

Hey Ron ... if this is the body shape you're referring to, I could send you a pattern for the shape. http://wrenguitarworks.com/Catalogue/PAGESNL/Wren_Guitar_NL_pageImg93.html |

Ron, Not sure if this is what you had in mind, but I have a detail drawing of the bracing for my 1930 12 fret L-1. It is the later body shape, like the L-00 from the 30's. It is the ultra light X-bracing. I made a drawing when I had my L-1 dis-assembled. James |

Doing a little research, looks like the Nick Lucas was indeed switched over to the larger shape in '29. However, the L-1, switched in '30. Glenn Todd Stock wrote: Gruhn says 1929 for the wider body. Two distinctly different guitars...a 13-1/2" wide, 12 fret-clear-of-body short scale, and the 14-3/4" wide, longer scale guitar that came out in 1929. Based on the notes in Gruhn, the body style changed to the more 00-shaped L-1 in 1929, and the 13 fret-celar version of the Nick Lucas was introduced in 1930. The '28 I had in for refret and bridge replacement (had a modern SM ebony pyramid; we did up one of the original Gibson pyramid) was a pretty little thing, and I pulled some measurements, bracing, and profile specs.
There is a decent timeline with features in the linked article, as well as the catalog shot I used to make up the new bridge. http://www.nicklucas.com/guitar-gibsonNickLucasSpecial.html |

I prefer and plan to use the earlier body style with X bracing - 13.5 in. lower bout. 24.25 in scale length and 12 frets to the body. Mahogany body, Adirondack top. |
