So I was planning my stacked heel that I glued with HHG and enjoying my nice glue joint and thought, " I'll just plane through the HHG squeeze out" and felt something wrong. Granted, it's just a no.4 Miller Falls, but the iron was going through the walnut like butter and leaving the wood smooth as silk, and when it got to the HHG squeeze out...it put a nice chip in my iron? Is hot hide glue that much harder than walnut? I guess it's time to either upgrade my plane or iron. At least now I have an excuse for my wife why I should get a LN. [:Y:] Clinton

sounds like the angle is a bit low, or the temper was too hard. try grinding a steeper bevel into it if you have the capability. glue shouldn't chip a planer blade, or any blade, in my opinion.

Don't blame the tool! Do as nyazzip says or chip the excess off with an old chisel. Either that or wipe off the glue before it sets hard.

All good advise. After clamping I felt tired so I turned off the lights and went to the house. It's a deal I made myself for safety reasons. I like the idea of a separate block plane with a steeper angle. FWIW- I was using a plane that I tuned the iron to 25 deg. for another project. Clinton

I agree with Grumpy
I have 2 planes in my shop and both are used on kerfing but I do have a thickness sander . I cheat.
