Post subject:  Looking For Walnut Source For Parlor-ish guitar

I've been looking for a good source for Claro Walnut for a small (parlor-esque) guitar. 13.25" lower bout and 9.25" upper bout of my own design and was wondering if I have missed anything other than the sponsored sources listed above? This will be my 4th guitar.

I also would like some feedback from those who build with Walnut what top material might complement that tonewood the best. I'm thinking a softer wood, like cedar, or Port Orford Cedar but have very little experience with either combo and am only going by what I've read about Walnut.

Thanks very much for any help.

Bruce Creps at Notable Woods usually has some nice stock

I like Western Red Cedar with Claro. Redwood works well too.

Claro walnut can be beautiful but I think black walnut has a bit of an edge tonally, and it tends to be just a bit denser. Zootman had some really nice black walnut sets recently but it appears they have all sold. If you are open to black walnut, you might contact him to see if he has some that are not yet posted.

Also, I have acquired several amazing sets from one of our members here (mcgr40) via eBay. Below is a photo of one of them, and below that is a link to his eBay page. This is really nice quality wood! And you won't find a nicer guy to deal with.

Best of luck.

Thank you so much for the tips and links. I'll bookmark each one.

I've seen quite a bit of Walnut/Cedar/Redwood in the small guitars but not much Walnut/Sitka/Lutz. Any special reason that the Spruces are favored less in the small guitars? Or are they?

Thanks again.

Yes, it is eastern Black walnut from Tennessee.

Larry - on the question of what top wood to pair with walnut, below is a link to a thread on another forum in which that question is discussed, among other walnut related things. Thought you might find it interesting.

Thanks so much for the link Charlie. I still consider myself a very novice builder and am not that familiar with the different tone woods. I built a Bloodwood B/S Redwood top 000 12 fretter that I really like and see that redwood might be a great compromise for a top wood paired with the walnut.
