I need to start monitoring the humidity in my shop area. Winter is ahead and I'm down in a concrete basement...

Are the digital hygrometers in the 50 buck range accurate enough in your experience?

Do you prefer the analog or digital style?

Is there a "prefered" maunfacturer?

Thanks in advance.

Get the little digital one here http://www.burgessviolins.com/products.html. Cheap and accurate.

Here's some good info on hygrometers: viewtopic.php?f=10101&t=27087&p=364087&hilit=hygrometer+test#p364087

What I'd recommend is go ahead and buy a decent digital one but try and find someone with a verified psychrometer to test against.

I buy hygrometers from cigar sellers. They generally have good prices on them, I like the digital ones. I check all mine for calibration once a year. You can buy a calibration kit from laboratory suppliers for a few bucks. Just put the device in the bag with the calibration pack, wait 24 hrs. and note the difference in the readings. I mark the unit with a + or - of whatever is needed to adjust the reading.

I use this:

It can be re-calibrated though I haven't had to yet. I've gone through a lot of meters looking for a reasonable one that's not too expensive. They are notoriously crap. This ones seems to consistently work right out of the box.

I use a dial hygrometer I took out of a fancy cigar box, along with what my dehumidifier reads. I put the dial hygrometer near my glue up station and adjust the dehumidifier until the hygrometer reads about 40-45% RH. I've been meaning to get a sling sycrometer (sp?) to test for accuracy but haven't done it yet.

I'm using a calibrated Abbeon unit. A bit pricey but I trust it. I also have a sling psychrometer for calibrating.
