For school. My 10 year old son has a project to do tonight. And I have to help.

-The sound device must include varying degrees of pitch and volume.
-Students need to explain how he/she constructed his/her devise.
-Students will demonstrate how the devise works and explain how it produces varying sounds.

Seeing as he must help, and given the limited time, and the fact that I have lots of wood and a good shop, what ideas would you propose?

Mike

Can you make a flute or a recorder of some type?

A few years ago I helped my son build a two string lap steel. It was basically a cedar 4x4 with a nut and saddle. The cool part was a hand wound pickup under each string that consisted of a coil of wire on a magnet. Tuners were simulated with a lag bolt. It was ugly but functional.

An empty tissue box with the clear plastic removed and 3-4 elastic bands stretched across a saddle on either end. Must be plucked with a rosewood pick, though. :)

How about one of those slide whistles? Very simple to build, using pvc or similar. Fun to play too.

I had my 10 year old make a washtub bass (sized down modified version) for a very similar project not long ago, was a big hit:)

Hi...I've been a lingerer here for a while...but since I'm an elemenary music teacher who handles the sound unit, I thought I'd chime in...

If you have any type of tubing around (pvc, copper, etc.) cut a few differnt length and attach them together. Expirement with different woods or objects for mallets, and viola! He can talk about dynamics by using different materials to strike the tubes, and pitch by relating the frequency/waves to the size of the tubes...

That IS cool! I'm guessing there were illicit drugs involved when it was conceived of.

Take 8 identical glasses and fill them with different levels of water to make a chromatic scale. Pals, Vic.

All you need is a piece of PVC pipe. Might take a while to get the hang of playing it...

Well, Corey and I spent that evening building his xylophone, it came out OK, by his measure, it was perfect, and he had a big day at school with it. :)
