Howdy. I'm making a tenor guitar and am planning a laminated neck with a carbon fiber rod. The glue up will be african mahogany with a narrow maple/walnut/maple sandwich down the middle. Any reason why shouldn't use a flatsawn maple board from Home Depot in the sandwich? (it'll be quartersawn when glued up)? Now hungry for walnut and maple sandwiches. |

Flat-sawn maple is fine. But since yours will actually be quartersawn, you will be fine. |

No reason at all not to. Dig through the maple at The HDs near you, it is not uncommon to fide curly maple mixed in. My current buld over in the challenge section is all HD curly maple. I always look when I am there and if I find a nice peice that is already cut (not 10 feet long) I pick it up just in case I need it later. ![]() |

Menards sells smooth maple AND mahogany strips, about 1x3", individually wrapped in plastic, that are perfect for laminated necks. basically ready to glue right there |

I have at least 100 bf of nice curly maple from Home Depot and Lowes. They don't have it as much anymore around here, but I can still find a piece occasionally. I've even got some really great wide stuff there in the past. No reason not to use the stuff...I have in several instruments and also as neck laminates. |

When you rip it on the table saw, you will know if it's any good. I got a piece of perfect looking maple from a hardwood supplier, and was ripping it to make cabinet parts. Man that stuff was moving all over the place! It was binding like crazy! |

FWIW I saw some incredibly curly maple at my local hardware store the other day. I went there on my bicycle but I'm thinking about going back to snag it. It doesn't matter what store the wood comes from. |
