A friend of mine was over the other night and asked me if I thought an iPad screen protector would work well as a pickguard. As it would be rather easy to just peel it off and put on a new one when it was all scratched up.... I thought it was a good idea so I thought I'd throw the idea out here to you all? Anyone try it or what do you think? Would it work? |

When I consider how easy the iPhone screen protecter comes off around the edges from just the case touching it, it makes me think that the pick would roll the edges back pretty quickly. But if you have an extra one, try it and let us know... |

I agree it might come off a little easier than you might like, but I don't see why it wouldn't work as long as you expect that you will be replacing it eventually (it's just a matter of how soon eventually comes) I'm sure there are several different types of screen protectors too and one might stay on a lot better than another. Let us know how it works if you do try it. |

Rod, I think it would probably work, but I'd be concerned about possible migration of some component of the adhesive into the guitar's finish. They wouldn't have to worry about that on the iPad, with the glass screen being pretty much impervious. Over a guitar finish, might be a different story. Maybe test first. Pat |

iPads are so cheap these days that I just use the entire iPad as my pick guard. As a bonus, I can load up the sheet music for a song I want to learn and protect my guitar at the same time. It's a total win/win. You could also use several iPhones to accomplish the same thing, but the look is a little busy for my taste. |

Rod True wrote: It's just an idea..... Personally, I don't think it's a bad one. Traditional pick guard material is quite a bit thicker than an iPad screen protector, so you should dampen the top less using it. As long as it doesnt damage the finish, it will be fine. |

Tony, You can just get the iGuitar app and play that, allowing you to leave the actual guitar safely ensconced in its hard shell case. What could protect against pick wear better than that? |

Filippo Morelli wrote: StewMac and LMI carry a product specifically for this. Why not use that? Same reason I don't limit my glue and sandpaper purchases to them. iPad screen protectors are so readily available that it makes sense to explore their applicability so that one isn't bound to a specialty retailer for every little thing. It becomes a convenience thing rather than a scarcity thing. |

I like the idea. Where can I get one? After having an instrument damaged at a show by a careless player who scratched the top, I would like to find something I can cut to shape for temporary use. |

Or you could just fake playing and let the IPad play a recording of a talented artist.......might improve my image to those listening...... |

I don't know about screen protectors, but these work and are very economically priced. I use them at shows, when lending out guitars for demo, etc. They don't harm the finish, but they also do not provide as much protection as a real pick guard. The top can be dinged through them by an aggressive flatpicker. http://www.stringsbymail.com/store/klin ... -1313.html |

I haven't had any issues. Its a static cling deal, no adhesives. But I suppose if the finish was really fresh it could cause a blush. |
