I used Zpoxy as the grain filler on my first build and I liked it. It won't be long till I need to pore fill the Cuban Mahogany guitar I'm working on and I'm considering tinting the pore filler used on the mahogany. So I'm wondering if anyone has tried tinting Zpoxy and if so, does it affect the curing in any way? Would there be any issue using a varnish over Zpoxy?

Darryl, maybe mix up a few drops, with a drop or two of colortone & see, but I might try contacting the manufacturer re colouring. Zpoxy won't mask the natural colour much, but if you WANT to enrich it, try potassium dichromate on bare mahogany. ...old world chemical stain that really pops mahogany (poisonous...looks like orange koolaid...don't drink it..you'll die!)

I tinted Zpoxy to make some pick guards with Trans tint and it worked fine, though it may be a problem keeping the color even on the wood as you sand the zpoxy. Actually Zpoxy looks great on Mahogany.

What I had in mind is possibly leaving a dark fill in the pores......so maybe tinting the first coat of pore filler, sand back to wood leaving the dark filler in the pores, then subsequent pore filler coats would be clear.

If this is your intent, you may well find using a more traditional blackened pore filler will be simpler and achieve the same result. If you want to pop the grain after such a pore fill, use a wash coat of z-poxy, shellac, or wipe-on varnish before adding sealer and/or topcoats.

Zpoxy will show the pores dark as it is. This neck was normal pore fill and the pores look great, I don't know if I would want them any darker

Wow Fred, that is dark. On the mahogany neck I filled with Zpoxy, the pores didn't look that dark.

Here is what my last mahogany neck looked like after pore filling with Zpoxy (prior to finishing). The pores aren't as dark as on Fred's neck.
