Post subject:  Baby Taylor Neck Adjustment

I'm building a 00 for my 12 year old daughter but likely won't be finished till around Christmas. My 3rd grade daughter is starting a guitar club at school and needed a small instrument and I found a lady here at work that bought a Baby Taylor for her daughter a few years back and she is now in college and never plays it (left it back at home) so she offered me a good deal on it. So I bought it from her.

It looks just like brand new but the string action is a little on the high side. I just purchased it at lunch today but it appeared there were two screws through the fretboard holding the neck in place. Is the neck also glued in place or can I remove the neck to adjust the neck angle by removing these two screws? The neck looked like it fit in place similar to a Fender electric guitar. Any suggestions on methods to change the neck angle? I'm assuming I should remove material from the neck and not from the body cavity.

I need to get the neck angle down, new strings and the nut height adjusted this weekend as the club meets the first time this coming Tuesday.

Yes, the neck is held on with 2 drywall screws. Taylor uses numbered shims to adjust the neck angle. My advice would be to find an Authorized Taylor Repair facility, which is usually a good-sized guitar store that retails Taylor products. Since you bought it second hand there is no warranty in place. If you have a good relationship with a Taylor guitar retailer they should be able to fix you up in one way or another for not too much money. If you don't want to mess with taking it someplace you could always just shim the neck backwards with a piece of veneer or shim stock.
Also check your neck relief before you determine the amount of backward tilt you need to achieve.

There will be screws under the paper label on the neck block as well. Frank Ford has an article on re setting these necks in detail.

Not on the old-style Baby Taylor. The new GS Mini has the full NT neck with bolts on the inside, but the original Baby Taylor is just screwed through the top of the fingerboard into the block.

Mine must be the old style. I removed the two fretboard screws and the neck came right off. There is no heel on this neck......so that's why I compared it to an electric Fender neck.

I ended up just using file cards as a shim. Two thicknesses and the neck is just like I wanted. I had to tighten the truss rod some. Not a lot but it wasn't even snug.

I'm letting the new strings settle then I'll work on the nut slots. I think it will play great after the nut work is done.

Thanks for the help!
