I listed some black limba B&S sets in the classifieds. A few of them have a couple worm holes, so I wrote a post about how I would fix them. I thought it might be useful to some people who wouldn't see it in the classifieds, so I thought I'd copy it here. This method is especially applicable to woods that have coloration that allows you to disguise the fix easily, so it won't work on everything, but it can work well on a variety woods. Now, to copy what I wrote in the classifieds: Had one pm inquiry about the worm holes. Here's what I would do to make them disappear. I would use a small gouge to carve out a small divot, removing the hole and a small amount of material around it, shaping the divot so that it follows the shape of the surrounding dark colored spot in the wood. Then I'd use coarse sandpaper to rough up the divot, so that the fill I'm about to make will have rough edges that will blend in, rather than the sharp edges left by the gouge. Again, I would carefully shape it to look like a natural dark spot that blends with the surrounding dark spot in the wood. Then I'd fill it with dust sanded from the edge of the set somewhere, and flood it with thin CA. I'd probably choose a light colored area of the wood to make the sanding dust from, because it will darken with the CA. I wouldn't worry about matching the color of the surrounding area, because, having shaped my divot carefully, it will look just like a natural part of the colors and figure. Sand it flush, and - voila - no one will ever know. |

I did a fix like that on the back of this ziricote guitar. On one side of the back there was a dark spot with a little bit of punky stuff in the middle, and on the other side, in that same spot, there was big hole. I'd say it was well worth saving the set with this little fix.

I really don't mind small worm holes - adds a little character I think. Todd - the shape of that guitar is great. |

My black limba head several worm holes and I didn't bother to fix them at all. I think they add to the character. HOwever, not everyone thinks the same as I do, so thanks for posting this Todd. |
