Post subject: | Best Diamond Tipped Engraving Drag Bit? |
I have a project that requires a diamond drag bit for engraving steel as well as some softer metals. Thus far I've come across a few, an while they're not cheap... They also have internal spring-loaded collets that allow the cutter to more readily work over slightly irregular surfaces and to be replaced when necessary, so the complexity explains the pricing. My question is: does anyone have experience with such a bit that they might recommend more highly than others? Collet size isn't a major concern, although the 1/2" is probably on 90% of the time already and we have the same low-runout collets in 1/4" and 1/8" sizes as well. The main project for which they will be used initially uses 316L surgical steel. If the tool can take other cutters for materials such as vinyl or adhesive backed masking media it would be a big plus. Thanks, and I look forward to your advice. -Hugh |

Since there have been no responses I figured an update was due regarding my planned course of action. My business partner and I have decided to use existing diamond drag engraving bits, vinyl cutting bits, an off the shelf collet and tension spring along with some steel bar stock and a lathe to fabricate our own. I will be drawing up designs shortly and when the project is complete I will share the process on this board... There's no way I'm the only one who doesn't mind investing several hours cutting, lapping, hand fitting, and polishing parts to save a bunch of cash. The main required tool for this project is a good lathe and some basic metal working tools. Should be fun! |
