I'm using Mohawk instrument lacquer, same as Behlen. Of course, they recommend that you only thin with their thinner, which is not locally available to me. So, have any of you thinned Mohawk instrument lacquer with other brands of thinner? The one thing I noticed is that their main ingredient is isopropanol where most other brands the main ingredient is toluene. Mohawk's thinner is less than 0.1% toluene. Any info or experience appreciated. Thanks, Kevin Looker |

I have used both lacquer thinner and acetone from Lowes and Home Deot without issue |

I've used thinner from Sherwin Williams with satisfactory results. |

Any lacquer thinner will work but some will not dissolve the lacquer as quick as others. I have never had the need to thin for normal spraying, only when doing a touch up or spraying sun bursts with my airbrush. |

Your local auto body supplier will have a good quality lacquer thinner as well as a retarder should you need it. |

agree with the retarder , this helps the surface to " flow out" better |

The only lacquer thinner that I avoid is the cheap stuff you get at Walmart. |

Thanks for all the replies. The one thing I'm starting to learn as I venture into this "hobby" is that whenever I try to take a short cut or substitute one thing for another, it ends up being more work because I have to undo what I did then do it the right way. ![]() In this situation, I actually asked & waited first.
