Post subject: | Sunburst on Back, Sides, and Neck of L-00 |
I've started working on my next build, a L-00. Initially, I was thinking of sunbursting just the top, but I thinking I might want to sunburst the back, sides, and neck (It would be my first attempt.). I can't seem to find any photos showing the back, sides, and neck. All the photos on Google seem to be front shots. My ES-135 has amber on the upper and lower bouts (sides) and in the middle of the back and back of the neck. I assume the L-00 would also... Does anyone have any photos of the of the back and sides, either of one you've built or a Gibson model? ...or do you have any comments or guidance? Also, I'm trying to decide whether I should use white binding or wood, like maple ...or maybe something like rosewood - maybe even tortoise... Any comments? ...like - why on earth would you want to use tortoise? ...or, wood would be all wrong... or, don't do a sunburst... Any comments are welcome. Thanks, Steve |

The sunburst you describe is pretty typical for Gibson, but I have never seen an L-00 done that way. All the ones I have seen are uniform dark brown on the back, sides, and neck. |

John is right. Gibson did not sunburst the backs and sides of the L-00. You can Google for images of the ......Century of Progress Gibson..... It had the burst on the back and sides. Here is my attempt on one of my 00 models with flamed maple binding: ![]() ![]() |

James, that is awesome! You just could not hide that maple completely, could you. No pics of the front? I feel I've been left hanging. ![]() Sorry! - is that Sapele? |

Here is the front. Steve only asked for the back sides and neck. ![]() ![]() Yes, it is Sapele and I felt guilty even covering part of it with a burst. Thanks for the kind comments. James |

James and Glenn, Thanks for posting those photos. James - you did a nice job on that one... The maple binding looks really nice. I guess white binding allows you to scrap the bindng if neded to remove any color overspray, but the maple looks so good... I'm sure that good masking technique is important. I'm building my L-00 with African Mahogany. I have never done a sunburst before. but then again, there's a lot of things I hadn't done 'til I did them... Do you have any advise on the mixing of dye in laquer? That is, the concentration used - such as, drops per ounce or teaspoons per cup, or "season to taste"? Is there any preference for LMI's or Stew-Mac's product? |
