anyone use a thin coat of shellac on the fretboard?????? or will this just make a mess over time?????? idunno

I would think it would make a mess. It's just not necessary.

I'd have to agree Wes. I've posted this before, but these were just well sanded (up to 2000) then buffed with Mezerna on a dedicated ebony wheel

Shellac will not wear well on a fretboard. There are better choices if you need to finish one.

I do seal them with a 50% mix of neatsfoot oil and turpentine. It penetrates a bit and then dries out but seals the board nicely so it doesn't accumulate crud as much later on. Yeah, then sand out to some zillion-fine grit and polish with lambs wool.
