Cool, what constitutes starting on an instrument before the start date:

Drawing up plans
Making molds/templates
resawing sets (not thicknessing just getting a board into back and side sets to acclimate)

Obviously no shaping or glueing actual parts. . .

Sounds cool. I might try to squeeze some BRW bindings in on this build.

Not sure how I am going to get a budget fretboard that isn't ugly as sin though...

I'm in. $150 allows enough room for decent hardware. Maybe I can actually get something done this time.

I will enter though history says it is not likely I will finish, but it will be nice to have some pressure on me. I have enough economy grade wood that I can use.

Alas, I don't think I can enter this one. Work and family are keeping me very busy right now. I've already started on my next guitar anyway and don't want to lose momentum. Good luck everyone!

Well, I guess that I will also attempt this challenge. My life is about to be in turmoil with impending layoff and retirement so I will try to fit it in.

Alright, against my better judgement, I started my thread. Here's to fun, here's to failure.

I will say I'm in again too. I still feel don't feel ready to spend more then $150 on a build any way. No idea on what to build, as long as I don't need to answer that question, I will build something in the time and price range.

Registration ends tonight at midnight, so if you're sitting on the fence, get off! ;)

And at midnight, those who are on board, are officially allowed to start working.

Start your thread here:

Again, keep it fun, and try to keep it friendly... duh

Ok, I'm going to give this a go. If the Selmer commission goes through then it aint gonna happen but I've had some ideas about building a local sourced freegan guitar and this just might get me going on it :D

I haven't done a challenge in several years. I'll bite!
The dulcimer Joni is pictured with was built by Joellen Lapidus. She built several cool looking dulcimers before moving on into I believe, the health care profession.

Alright, I may end up dropping out but I'll try to fit my first acoustic build to the budget.
I'm in (for now).

Hey!
I have been really busy,
and haven't been around here much lately.
Can I still get in?
I've got some ideas going!

( 2 ) The price cap is $150.

( 5 ) Your instrument must be finished for judging by end of November 2012 . I'm guessing that things will be too busy during the holidays for people to want to deal with this project. But, if you all think you need more time, and wouldn't mind working through December, then I can change this.

I also want to shorten the voting period to 2 weeks. So, the first two weeks of December will be for voting, and the winner will have the prize before Christmas.

(10) The prize is going to be a brace carving chisel, made by yours truly out of damascus steel. I'll need some input on the best design for that kind of chisel.

Since I'm the sponsor, and providing the prize, I'll not be competing. But I will have a build thread for the aforementioned chisel, for your viewing pleasure. :-)

If any of you have any suggestions, now is the time. I'd especially like some input on items 2, 5, and 10.

Hi Phillip,

My only suggestion would be to relax the amount in Item #2. I think the only exception for this should be the tuners. I much prefer to use good quality tuners on my instruments. That doesn't mean Waverly's necessarily, but more often than not, yes. I also like Gotoh 510's, and these will eat into the budget a lot also. Why build a nice high-end instrument and put poor quality tuners on it? I know that they can be replaced often, but it's not something that I prefer to do. Once tuners are on, I prefer to leave them rather than risk a nice finish job, or have to deal with screw holes that aren't in the same locations.

The time limitation is tough for me, but I guess I just need to finish my other two projects at the same time, and use the spray booth time for all three at once. Yikes...

I love Damascus steel knives, and I think that's an incredibly wonderful and generous prize. I might have to buy one from you if I don't win! A nice Santoku or Nakiri would be a hot choice for this (or for what I buy!)

Best,

Don

Hi Todd,
Someone has made copies of the "princess dulcimer", although not exact replicas. Toward the bottom of this article from the Everything Dulcimer website is a discussion of the acoustic properties of the model.

When folks are cranking out absurdly cheap costs for the instruments they are building, I think they would do well to explain how those costs are so ridiculously cheap. Now I don't say that because I question that the wood came to them that cheap. Rather the stories behind how you got it that cheap are always a hoot and should be part of the build thread.

So tell us not just the $$$ but the story behind it. :ugeek:

+1 to Filippo. That is one of my favorite parts of instrument making; I love collecting materials from unlikely/non-tonewood sources.

Hey if I'm not too late, count me in.
Mine will be one of my Po' Boy model guitars. It's a L-00, which is a suitable platform for a budget instrument.
Thanks.

Ha! I'm just getting to finishing off the neck/fb for my first challenge entry! Should finally have the thing done in a couple of weeks now!! Talk about slow....

Despite my horrible track record for not finishing on time, I'd really like to participate in the new build also - but didn't get to read the threads until just now.
Can I go start a latecomer's blog too? I have a mind to do a new $150 experimental (2nd round of my "triple-top" work) SJ, again using local woods :)

Cheers,
Dave F.
