Just wondering, no trolling intent ... I have seen so many posts from US builders who refer to the "heal" , where formerly it would have been the "heel", that it occurred to me that it may well have become accepted usage in the US , just like "honor" as opposed to UK "honour" ... |

No, it's just that guitar building is a really bad influence on your spelling abilities! Guitar builders also type your for you're, and waste for waist, among many other things. ![]() |

I see the same problem in a car forum I frequent. It's "brakes", not "breaks"! |

Grammatical and spelling issues abound on forums. One has to learn to ignore those things and look for the content. Hard as at may be for some of us. A pet peeve of mine is when people use "to" instead of "too". Just as long as you use the word "speeling" instead of "spelling" like our beloved forum leader. Right Lance? ![]() |

Breaks - that's a good one! Somewhat reminds me of a local one that irks me a lot. In Romanian we have "pup" for kiss. Some halfbraines trying to be cool are writing it like it would be spelled in English: "poop" (the word is often used in greetings) Nice. |

Quote: Guitar builders also type your for you're, and waste for waist, among many other things. My pet peeves: Ware instead of wear (e.g. playware). Guage instead of gauge. Effect instead of affect. In most cases, effect is a noun and affect is a verb. Momento instead of memento. Momento is not an English word. "It's" for the possessive. "It's" is a contraction that means "it is". The possessive form is "its"....no apostrophe. Before I was introduced to Internet forums, I had no idea so many of us were literally challenged. Most of this is sixth grade level grammar. ' |

Man oh man. I have been wanting to say something about "heal" blocks for so long, not to mention the other simple grammatical mistakes that go on each day. I am not a grammar Nazi in general, but when adults say things like, "I seen that before" it makes me nutty! There, their, and they're are three words that are not interchangeable. Your and you're are also not interchangeable. Come on people! The world thinks we are idiots as it is! Lets not prove them right! Seriously, this is middle school grammar! I swear that I felt a weight (or should I have said "wait") lift from my shoulders when I wrote that! People, the little red dotted line under your words does not mean the computer is impressed by your grammar and spelling. It means you made a mistake. Right click and fix it!! One more things: Definitely does not contain the letter "a" so please knock it off! |

I have to admit that when I type on internet fora, I rarely bother to look over my grammar as carefully as I do in real life. I tend to type as if I were speaking, often tripping up on homminyms. I suppose I should go back and notice, but. . . Many people get defensive when these types of threads come about, but I see them as good reminders. I got busted out on "heel" on another forum a while back, I'm glad I did too. Many of you will love this site: http://public.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/errors.html#errors |

![]() ANOTHER OF THE MOST ANNOYING THINGS IS SPEAKING IN ALL CAPS. I try to keep my English correct most of the time, but over the years I've come to appreciate how resilient the language is to grammar and spelling errors. I mean, if you can correct someone's language, doesn't that mean they got the message across anyway? It's only a problem when you misunderstand because of an error. And look at the l337 speak and lol speak dialects... hideous, and yet quite readable. Human brains amaze me with their adaptability and natural language processing abilities. |

Quote: I could care less. Fractured cliches are another peeve of mine. All they do is corrupt the meaning. It's supposed to be "I couldn't care less" - because I have no interest. "I could care less" means there is some interest. Another one: Quote: Road to hoe. The correct saying is "row to hoe". |

Why yes, heal is perfectly acceptable. When I see someone write, ‘I gots to make a new heal block for my gitar’, I imagine him performing some mystical cantation that will block all bad things from happening. Perhaps reaching right to the gitar's sole, oh wait, is that a fish?. Anyway, most of us in the US can always use a little heal blocking from time to time. |
