OK, I need another bending iron. If you've been following my saga, my idea now is to get a good used, properfully functioning iron, take it partially apart, check the wiring, and RE-upgrade my other one. Then I'll have a back-up, or re-sell one of them.

So, you folks who've moved away from using an iron, if you have a good used Ibex that you're not using any longer, I'd be interested in talking. Please contact me via PM.

Thanx!

I had one and to me it didn't get hot enough. They advertise 500 degrees but thats a crock. I had trouble hitting over 300 with it. So I ebayed years ago. I now use a home made one made from 2" black steel pipe and an electric barbecue charcoal starter stuffed in it. I used it with a torch for a while but switched to the charcoal starter when I seen it in another forum. I use a harbor freight router control to vary the temperature. It's easier to vary the temperature using the electric charcoal starter then the torch.Works great. The temperature hits around 350 degrees at the highest and I can reduce it depending on what I'm bending. It's not as pretty as the ibex but works great. Below is a link to a forum post about the home made ones to give you an idea of what I'm talking about..

IIRC Howard Klepper found a replacement element that had twice the heating capacity and just swapped them out. Check the archives.

I haven't seen your saga, but following along with Ken's comment, if you have a bad Ibex iron, this current thread:

gives the information you need to order a hotter heating element and control from Graingers. I did this upgrade, and
it works great!

I was told by a supplier that Ibex upgraded their bending iron recently
