Post subject: | String Tension |
I was wondering if anyone had a formula for finding the approximate string tension for an instrument. I'm sure there is a common one out there, I have just been unable to find it. I'm asking because I am planning on building somewhat of a tenor Mandolele, and was wondering how much I will have to "build up" my instrument to accomodate the added tension. Thanks as usual! |

This slide is from a presentation by D'Addario's Fan Tao at the 2008 GAL conference. I believe it was later summarized in American Lutherie. Anyway, one of the topics Tao covered was how to find string for some of these odd ball creations that we builders come up with. If the tension charts don't help you might consider contacting him ![]() Obviously, solve for Tension |
