Dunno about hosting it, but I'd throw my hat in the ring with a build....

Yea, I can just enter just to embarrass myself again.

I'd love to participate again, but as the winner of the first one, am I disqualified? Maybe I should be the sponsor?

Tai, don't be so hard on yourself. I think you did a fine job.

Personally , I dont think u would be disqualified , but sponsering would be a nice thing . What can you do as sponser for a prize ? And what kind of " Build " ( 1 ) instrument same for everyone ? Or Builders Choice ?

My vote would be builders choice, with similar guidelines as the last one. I only have one form available for building (and it's not a dread), but would love to experiment with "local" materials or similar design and budget constraints. It's the creativity that makes it fun!

I would be wiling to jump in. But I think you should do a uku challenge and guitar challenge and with the guitar you have a higher budget.

Im not saying that the higher budgets a bad idea , My main reason for keeping it lower was to incite more to try . If we make it to high then some may not want to join feeling they cant afford the cost . And a lower cost was to try and intice Newbies out to try it.

Anyway that was rational for my decision on that

Sorry, a little busy with guitars to restore and possibly more on the way (at least I hope), and since nobody's paying me to build challenge instruments...

I was just saying the higher budget for more freedom bc tuners are not cheap. I havent been doing it long enough to know where to get all the deals. I was thinking like a $200 cap over the $150 just so you have more elbow room. Just a thought, I'm not saying
You have to spend that much but you have the freedom too.

We are on same page . Hopefully someone will take the sponser idea and run with it , I have mentioned it to someone who discussed it earlier , lets see what happens . [:Y:]

Hey Philip,

You could offer a baggie of damascus cutoffs as the prize. I've wanted to try to fashion some tuner buttons from damascus for awhile. I nearly bought a billet at a crafts fair last month with the intent to try. I'm a damascus fan...

How about something like a complete build using 2x4's from Home Depot or something?

I would like to participate in this one if I can think of something.
If Phillip sponsors, think a damascus steel brace carving chisel would be an excellent prize.
I think you might get more entries with a higher budget, because then people could try to work with a build they were already planning, rather than having to work something special out to meet the cost requirement.

Post subject:  Re: Challenge 2012 , second round ?

I dunno. I may or may not enter, depending on the timing and rules. The last one was a lot of fun, and happened to be a good chance to do a project to prepare myself for making a full size harp guitar. But I'm slow enough and have a long enough list of designs to build, that I'd rather not sidetrack myself too much by inventing things specifically for contests, and most of my to-do list wouldn't work with tight budget constraints or local wood restrictions.

But I suppose I could do the sponsoring if nobody else wants to. Not sure what would be best to offer up as the prize... maybe a custom made inlay of whatever you want?

I'm kind of surprised you didn't win the last one. I thought yours was cooler than mine. :)

I'd be more than happy to sponsor the next one. I like both the damascus tuner button and chisel idea. I also have a lot of osage orange. I could supply a pre-thicknessed set of back and sides.

Well Phillip , If thats what you want to do , contact Lance and he can help you set it up like I did and feel free to use any of the rules etc: I made up and change to suit your idea ! It will be your baby , make it how you want it ! [:Y:]

BTW IM IN !

Thanks :) Actually, I'm glad you won, so I didn't have to deal with the situation that I have no use for bandsaw blades, or plans to buy one in the near future

And if you're up for sponsoring, go for it. I love osage orange, so a back/side set, or some fingerboards/bridges/bindings would certainly make it more tempting to enter. And with the box of claro walnut that just arrived from utarazo, I do have another domestic wood design coming on... that is, if no exotics is going to be one of the rules again. Could be fun to change up the restrictions this time. But that's the fun of being the sponsor, you can make it whatever you want :)

I think a handmade damascus chisel would be worth the effort itsself . [:Y:]

That's would be sweet to win. We should do any wood this time. One bc i have all kinds of random boards my brother left and you can do sweeter things with rosettes with different woods.

I would almost definitely join if that were the case. Or at least if we made the wood requirement for the back and sides / body blank only.

The biggest challenge I would have is ACTUALLY finishing up my 2012 Challenge #1 guitar before 2013!....

That's what everyone I know says happens when you have a Job, young kids, and a house.. No time for anything...

Sigh!

Post subject:  Re: Challenge 2012 , second round ?

I think the idea of the challenge build was to cultivate some community and activity on the forum. The idea to have a contest with a winner is a bit weird to me.
So I will propose something a bit different with the goal of cultivating forum community and making every one a winner.

We divide the forum population by region, those within that region pool resources for a common build, at the end this is donated to a regional charity to auction or raffle. The members of each region will need to decide on the build and the charity, the charity will agree to promote the donation. Then the members will pull materials from stash, preferably local, do some of the work and mail it off to the next builder. Keeping it regional will keep the shipping down and create an instrument of local origin. It would be fun if all the groups worked from the same plans, OLF SJ?, and made different regional versions of the same guitar. At the end of it all whichever group's guitar raised the most money gets bragging rights, every one wins. No time limit on this, how ever long it takes is fine.

I know it would be a lot of work, but to me it would be more fun and meaningful then a challenge similar to what we just did.

I have some wood laying around,
and 4 Gotoh tuners (cheap ones)
and I could build a tenor electric lap steel by the end of the year.
Another tenor lap job?
Sure, why not.
It's the pickups I'm worried (NOT)
about.
