Just finished sanding back the first coat of a zpoxy pore fill over Honduran mahogany. At this point, it seems as though the pores are relatively well filled (you know how that goes!). There are a few places where I sanded through and was expecting this. My original plan was to do a second coat of zpoxy and then a wash coat after sanding back again. Time is at such a premium these days (3 kids under 5 years of age!), I'm now thinking of going straight to a wash coat to even the color out. Since I'm brushing the finish on, I figure it goes on so thick, any remaining pores should be taken care of. Lazy thinking? I started to ask myself if I needed to pore fill at all. Now, I know THAT'S lazy! Any thoughts on the matter? Different shrinkage rates of the pore fill and finish (KTM-SV) pose a problem? Thanks in advance! |

Do a good pore fill. It's one of the most important aspects of finishing. (importance varies with species of wood) A brushed finish shouldn't be applied thick. 2 to 3 wet mils is plenty thick enough for a coat reguardless of application method. |

Word. Thanks for the head check. No short cuts to a good finish! Not that I've ever achieved one! I was just assuming that the coats of a brushed finish go on thicker than a sprayed finish, having never sprayed one myself. Thanks, bro! |

I agree with Woody. Get your pores filled well before going to the final finish. The final finish is only as good as the base it is applied on. Each process will take as long as it takes, don't try to rush it. |
