What's up with R Taylor heels? I thought they would be the same as regular Taylors but when I drilled for a strap pin based on the Taylor spec sheet http://www.taylorguitars.com/global/pdf ... ap_pin.pdf, I hit metal. Anyone know?

Can't answer that but I've worked on a few and know they are quite a different animal than the the regular variety. I will make a note of the strap pin thing, thanks for the heads up.

The PDF you've linked in from 1994. Taylor no longer uses inserts, but has a piece of metal (aluminum?) embedded in the neck. It's been a couple years since I've had a neck off a Taylor, but I believe you can just drill through the metal you hit and install the screw.

Kent, it's a piece of 1/2" aluminum rod in bedded vertically in the heel and then tapped. I suspect their spacing still holds, which on their concert models was an inch down and 1.5" on center.

Thanks all. It's funny, I looked around quite a bit before and after and found nothing on the web but the specs I linked to. Fortunately, no harm done.

If you are ever in doubt and have any friends in health care, sneak it in for an X ray. Here's a Loprinzi I took a film of to look at the neck joint. You could tape a little BB where you want to put the screw for reference.

My insurance won't cover that....

But maybe theirs would. I think you're on to something. $800 for a strap pin, another $1000 if the guitar has to stay overnight, $2000 for a private room....
