Looking for the "gap" ? Just a couple of pics for those who repair.
'47 Martin 00-18, 14 frets to the body.

Don't try drilling through the T-bar!

that is a typical martin neck. If you need to do any fret work ,this will have to be compression fretted. The gap in the neck block is there by design. It was assembled with hot hide glue.

Hi John,
I was posting these pictures to give those who maybe haven't reset a late 40's Martin and idea of the location of the "gap" where to drill their hole, and at what angle. There was a thread about steaming necks last week and the question arose.

with Martins you remove the first fret into the body from the neck joint and drill toward the soundhole . you will find the gap. I like to drill 2 holes so I can let the free steam out and not pool as much water into the block.

Too late! Neck is reinstalled.
Best estimate with a steel rule 7/32" @ the 14th fret in the center of the arch.

I'm going to reset the neck on my first build, it's a T-bar neck.

I never thought of having to drill thru the t-bar...I would have gone at it in the middle of the fret slot and hit the bar! HA!

So do you guys drill to one side of the t-bar to avoid it, and perhaps a steam escape hole on the other side?

thanks!
