Anyone ever bind the headstock on a classical, or is the wood outside the slots too narrow? Any pictures, if you do. What about bound fingerboards on a classicals? Thanks, Wendy |

I have done it like this. It looks nice. The binding is ebony with a bwb purf. On bound fret boards I do not like to accent the binding, I just let it blend in. It makes the fret ends look nicer. Attachment: IMG_5031willis.jpg

I've seen headstocks bound on classicals but it isn't very common. I bind my fingerboards on classicals with offcuts from the same boards so they don't really look bound but the fret tangs are neatly hidden. If you're using really black ebony, though, hiding the ends with burn-in lacquer or maybe even black epoxy would probably be nearly as effective. |

That looks really nice Stephen. Have you ever seen contrasting binding on a classical headstock or fingerboard? Although seeing how nice yours looks is getting me rethinking what I was considering. Wendy |

Wendy I have not seen a lot of that sort of thing but I am sure that a nice contrasting binding on fret board and headstock will look great on a classical. I am sure that whatever you decide to build will look great! |

Yes, indeed. It might not be traditional, but Stephen has shown us how to do it in an elegant, understated way that, to my eyes, is quite beautiful and appropriate. That is an extremely beautiful application of binding, Stephen. I think you have a wonderful sense of visual design--not too much and not too little. It's just right for one of your instruments. I´ve done it twice with the same wood from the headplate and a contrasting 2mm vennier in between. one is on my avatar, this is the other:  havent thought about doing it to the fretboard, not sure I will. but it could look nice if its subtle and not to contrasting. good luck! |

100% agreed - what a beautiful touch to what is "traditionally" left plain. Both examples above are understated elegance - really fits the bill for a classical (to my eye) Also agree with the "stealth" bound fretboard, especially if one does the semi-hemi-quarter-spherical treatment. Rob |
