Am going to apply a Black self stick PicGard to the top of the Purple Heart build . It has been buffed with buffing compound . Do I need to wipe it down with somthing to make sure it sticks properly ? And if so what is recommended to clean the top prior to sticking this on .

Naphtha removes wax so I would clean the area with some before trying to stick on the pg.

Was kinda what I was thinking , but this Laq is only a month cured and wasnt sure If i would be creating a finish problem for myself .

I've wiped nitro with naptha regularly with no problems. I use it during the buffing process to remove compound residue between compound grits.

I don't think you'll be creating a finish problem, per se, but I've found with the clear removable pickguards, that they do cause some surface finish anomolies when you leave them on for any period of time - especially if the finish is still gassing off. If you're putting that pickguard on for good - I wouldn't worry about it. If you anticipate removing it after time, I would expect there to be a visible difference on the finish of the top - from where the guard was and wasn't...

Thanks for the responses . Yeah I have seen where a picguard has been rremoved and there is a visable color diffrence in the nitro Laq. This one is going to be permenant so there shouldnt be any issue there . I was just curious mainly because the nitro is fairly fresh .

Related question, please. Corky's insight about off-gassing under a pickguard is a good one and I hadn't thought much about it until just now. How long do you think nitro finishes continue to off-gas? I realize this will depend on some variables such as thickness, etc. The only instrument I ever made with a stuck-on pickguard was cured a month before buffing, and it was probably another two weeks before the pickguard was mounted. I expect it was fully cured by then, but I'm curious.

Yeah , kinda the same line of thought here . Its about a month old as far as the Laq is concerned and I will have the picguard on in a week so ( 5 ) weeks from spray to stick on PG . Is that reasonably long enough ?

noooooo no no no, do not use Acetone on finish. If you do, you will be a shoe-in for "Doofus of the Month"

Acetone will eat through lacquer like a hot knife through butter.

edit* you may be able to use a general purpose adhesive remover. However, like with all things, test on a scrap piece first!

Thanks , I kinda thought that it was too harsh . Havent had much need in the past to use either one so its an area that I wasnt sure about .
