I've posted some pictures of this one on the Tru-Oil threads. I think it's finished. I had it strung up for about a month, then took the strings off and completed the finish, I think. Like FP, Tru-Oil is eventually abandoned. Not sure it's ever finished! Sycamore B&S Carpathian Spruce Top EIR Bindings and Bridge Ebony Fingerboard Bloodwood accents in the rosette and purfs. Thanks, guys! Steve, it's not confidence, it's luck! I was just looking for something else that's not French polish. Too many folks willl shy away from a French polish finish - too many issues with perspiration, case burn, etc. Easy to repair, yes, but has a bad rep. in some places. Ever since reading Kevin Aram's interview in "American Lutherie", I've figured on trying a rubbing oil (varnish) finish. I can't say it's any easier than FP, but the application time is like 10% of the effort. Rubbing out and polishing up is 40%. The rest is waiting for the stuff to dry so you can do the 40%. |

Lovely guitar Waddy, To my eyes your best yet. When you think back to the days of #1, we all lived that. You know I'm a big fan of oil finishes, they have centuries of history behind them. What do you think of the Tru-oil? As you know I used to own a Kevin Aram, he is a no compromise, top end builder (he always uses Rodgers tuners!) and he much prefers an oil finish over anything else. In fact I've just finished a CS336 using the Liberon Finishing Oil that Kevin uses and you really must try it on your next guitar, I know you'll be converted to it. I definitely prefer it to Tru-oil, it gives very similar results to my bespoke oil, but much quicker and at a tenth of the cost. Great guitar, and just got to love old Turlough. Colin |

Thank you for your comments, Colin. I have experimented with Liberon, but found it a bit harder to use than Tru-Oil. Longer drying time, etc., but maybe I didn't give it a fair shot. I also had some problems with it drying over Z-Poxy, but don't know if it was the Z-Poxy or the Rosewood that caused the problem. Tru_Oil won't dry right on Rosewood either. |

Congratulations on #10 Waddy. To my untrained ear it it has all of what you would want. Bright trebles, solid mids and a nice full bass. It's a wonderful feeling to hear your guitars played well. Looks very well done also. Back and sides look great. How do you think the voice compares to your earlier ones? Are you learning anything or just more confused?  Cheers, Danny |

Hey, Waddy, I've had good luck with Tru Oil on parts (finger rests, tailpieces, truss rod covers, etc.) and have finished furniture with it, too. But I haven't done an entire instrument with it. Just curious--Do you remember approximately how many coats you applied? I've always had best results when I applied so many coats that I lost count. It sure worked nicely for you. Patrick |
