Post subject:  headstock logo - E

I've been trying to choose logo for my builds. I'm thinking about using something simple and elegant, like the first letter of my last name (E).
Has anybody used E as a logo on the headstock? Is it taken already?

Thanks

Epiphone use it on some of their headstocks. I wouldn't let that stop me from using an E, as long as it is different from the Epi.

Alex has it just right. You can't use the Epiphone "E", but no one owns the basic letter shape. You can do anything within reason that you want to do with the basic letter "E". My advice as a graphic designer/advertising guy: Get a pencil and lots of scrap paper and start sketching. Be persistent and don't settle for your first results. Just keep sketching. And don't freak out about whether you think you do or don't have drawing skills. If you can build a guitar, you can sketch an "E". You'll be fine, my friend. Now.....get to sketchin'.

Or you can lazy like me and keeping your eye out for the perfect letter in mags, greeting cards, etc. Took me a year to find the perfect "W" for mine :)

Above is another E that you should not use, but it is rather ugly, anyway.

I didn't want to accidentally use the same logo as somebody else has.
Epiphone rarely puts E on their headstocks, main logo is still "Epiphone". I think people wouldn't mistake my guitar with E on the headstock for Epiphone production.

What do you guys think about this-

I used to use "B" on my headstocks (and may use an occasional B on future builds) but I decided to switch to "Brackett". I was playing one of my guitars at a gig and a kid came up and said "Nice Breedlove". I don't have anything against Breedlove guitars. My "B" looks nothing like theirs. There's all kinds of builders using a "B" for a logo, but there's only one "Brackett" I know of.

Your "E" looks nice, but your entire name would be more rememberable.

The first thing I think about when thinking about logo fonts is how easy & how well it can be cut out (MOP or whatever) and inlaid into the headstock. That one would be impossible (maybe even with CNC).

I'm using laser cutter to cut it out of MOP blank. I'm more concerned about routing the slot, in the headstock, for it.

I've got a process that can cut shell down to zero line width now, but it's certainly a lot less economical than standard cutting. If you're looking for uniqueness, then picking something difficult to make is pretty effective, but it's also costly.

I'm not sure how thin laser cutters can go with shell so far as line width, but I've seen some guys using them to cut out the pockets as well so that might not be an issue.

I would use your full last name if it was me. Erleman would look fine across the headstock.

As for doing the shell, you might talk to Don Williams. Don does a great job and is quite reasonable in pricing to do the shell and the headstock veneer.

I reckon your first name - Rasmus - is very cool. I don't know if it is common in Estonia but it sure would be distinctive where I come from. Have you thought of using that as your label-name?
Best wishes
Mark (which is a plain name everywhere in the world)
