Post subject: | Waxing the fretboard prior to finishing... |
Hi all. I have read here a few weeks ago about applying Johnson's paste wax on the fretboard prior to finishing a guitar, in order to avoid the finish to stick to the fretboard. I like this idea a lot because removing the finish that has sinked in under the tape as always been a pain. Now I'm worried about two things: 1) Will the standard masking tape I put on the fretboard (I usually use the green one) will still stick to the fretboard? 2) How can I avoid accidentally applying wax on the borders of the fretboard, thus preventing any finish to stick to it? Or better yet, is there a reliable way of removing the wax on that area? Thanks! |

I got your PM, but for some reason forgot about it. Sorry. I don't have any problem getting the tape to stick to the waxed surface. I've never thought about any wax on the sides of the FB, but I've never had a problem. I use Polyester on my necks with a isolate sealer. I "wash" the neck with MEK and acetone before finishing, perhaps that removes any wax that made it's way to the edges of the FB. |

Hi Filippo, I tape to the very egde of the fretboard, but then use my fret beveling jig to file off the finish on the border of the frets and bevel of the fretboard, prior to removing the tape. That eliminates the risk of the finish peeling off. My frets are installed when the guitar is being finished, and there is alway a small quantity of finish that bleeds on each side of the frets. Removing with a razor blade works ok, albeit destroys the nice polish on the fretboard where I scrape. Resanding and repolishing does not give me results as nice as I would want them to be. So I'm giving the waxing a try, hoping the finish bleed will peel right off the fretboard without affecting the fretboard polish. Of course, if you fret after finishing, thus sanding and polishing the fretboard at the same time, you don't have this problem. |
