I'm gonna be making a fingerboard radius jig from Todd Stock's plans and was wondering does it make any difference wether you slot the board before or after you radius it.Thanks all Rob. |

I always slot before radiusing, it just makes the flow of work constant for me |

My RAS just isn't that accurate. There is enough slop in the mechanism to allow several thousands variation in slot location. It is a craftsman 2.5 HP saw with a very reasonable amount of use so it is not worn out, just sloppy. cecil |

On the visit to the Woodshop Rocks shop, Duane was set up using a RAS for slotting. It was a dedicated set up and looked pretty nice and easy to use. He let his middle schoolers use it to slot. Just a nail in the fence and a Stew Mac template. I have had the misfortune of being assigned to make some RAS work accurately in a sash shop, so I understand Todd's sympathy. Any dirt on the ways messes it up, those roller bearings and ways need to be spiffy clean, after that, there are just lots of parts that can add an inaccuracy. Chris, I have been looking at RAS's for multiscale, if you have seen Sheldon Dingwal's set up, it is worth imitating, but it is on a sliding miter saw and the depth is set with a bearing, so you can slot after radius and have consistent slot depth. Very cool set up. Charles Fox has one in his shop, we just saw it set up with 5 blades for kerfing, he had a cool foot pedal to hold and index the linings. They are big and finicky, hard to justify the space in the shop. |
