I'm working on two Cedar necks for my Walnut build, one Port Orford and one Eastern red. I'm leaning towards using the Eastern red. Any thoughts on using Eastern red for a neck. Thanks, Scott |

Unless you have vy clear (no knots) stock, you will find it splintery/ brittle , but easy to carve.Might want to reinforce it with cf in center for classical.Have not used port o cedar, but some have used it for tops and will chime in. |

I just finished two necks of Port Orford Cedar...and two electric bodies. Although this was primarily a tone experiment I couldn't bring myself to make these necks soley from POC. My first impression, though grounded in....well...something less than experience, was that it was not quite stiff enough to use by itself. I laminated a healthy strip of Bloodwood and Wenge down the middle of them. The luthier I bought this wood from makes Flamenco guitars with solid POC necks. He said he never had any problems. |

PO cedar is incredibly strong, approaching Doug Fir in strength. I would not hesitate to use it for a neck if it is strength you are worried about. L. |

ERC is not very stiff for its weight. I would definitely use some reinforcement. POC is another world. It is a world-class tonewood, with very high stiffness to weight ratio. ERC is at the other extreme. In fact, about the only similarities are that both woods smell and have 'cedar' in their name. |
