Somewhere on here I read that someone, I think it was David LaPlante, is using wonder rag for their muneca covers. I bought a box and tried it last weekend for pore filling and was very impressed with it. The only problem I have is that, when I wrap it around a filling, I am having trouble getting it smooth around the perimeter edge with no puckers or creases. I'm wondering if it needs to be washed to soften it up a bit before using? Anybody else using it? Thanks, Wendy |

Wendy, I can’t comment about wonder rag… other than it looks rather expensive. I go through a lot of material. I buy J.E. Moser’s fine cheesecloth by the bag from woodworker supply. I use it for both the wad and cover. For pumice pore filling I use one or two layers of cheesecloth wrapped around a soft white rubber eraser. David's process is a bit different from some, more traditional, FP processes. If Wonder Rag won't conform to your muneca, I recommend using muslin sheeting. White, well worn, sheets are readily available at garage sales for a price somewhere below $2.00, and mostly, less than $1.00. One double or queen sheet is good for 4 or 5 guitars. |

Hi Wendy, I noticed that my latest box of Wonder rags <is> a little different than before. They seem a little thicker and less stretchy than the previous incarnations. I'm still using them for muneca covers though. Try moistening with alcohol and wrap tightly around well compressed wadding. I then use a long heavy duty twist tie to really tighten up the whole thing. If there is a good "dome" on the bottom any of the little side folds won't matter. One thing I also do is to flatten out and "knife edge" one side of the pad to get into corners such as the fretboard extension and the neck join, here you can pull out the little folds to smooth it out a bit. Remember that you are never really using the entire surface of the pad at any one time. Best |

Thanks David, I was hoping you would show up with an answer. I have tried a couple of other alternatives like muslin and old worn out t-shirts. I really like the wonder rag from the little I used it when pore filling. It held up really well and no lint and no clogging. I will try your suggestions. Wendy |

I use folded heavy weight cotton T-shirt material for the earlier stages (2 for a dollar at the local thrift store). When it's time to start using a drop of oil, I switch to cotton bed sheet material (like Waddy) with a fine knit wool sweater core. (The thrift store has these, too.) I go through a lot of T-shirts, but one bed sheet, and a couple of sweaters lasts for several dozen guitars. I tried a micro-fiber cover ("Wonder Rag", or something similar) at the suggestion of a friend. For me, it was interesting, but I still preferred the bed sheet. I use a hint of pumice on the pad if there's any tendency towards lint nibs. I like to be able to change the cover frequently, and not think of cost. Most importantly, I'm set in my ways. I wasn't having problems, so why change? |

I'm surprised people would use cheesecloth. It seems too porous and delicate to me. I like using worn white cotton tee shirt material the best. I've used sheets that were a bit too thick but still worked. A wool sweater from goodwill's has lasted a while to wrap pieces around. |

I have only done a couple of french polish finishes, but I followed some recommendations to use worn linen tablecloths or napkins for covers. I found some really cheap on eBay. Linen seems to work very well as it is not overly porous and it does not abrade the existing finish because the cloth has a slick surface. |
