I am very curious about the difference that I get if I stain directly wood like with a concentrated liquid stain on water or if I dilute it with lacquer and spray it after sealing the wood with some clear lacquer. Would I get any appreciable difference? |

Variations in the porosity of the wood can cause an ugly blotching effect on a lot of woods when stained raw.You will get a much more even staining effect if you seal the wood with shellac or lacquer than if you stain directly on the raw wood. I typically seal with shellac since it uses a different thinner, and you don't have to worry about the stain coat dissolving the seal coat. You can find a lot on the web- I searched "staining wood evenly", and got lots of hits.
