Post subject:  February 2012 doofus of the month...
Hi guys...

I am afraid I am a contender for the doofus of the month...

I have been working on my demo guitar, but what happened is that I was doing a OM cutaway and the box is almost complete, and so I braced the back and carved the brace, only when it comes to actually fitting the back to the box I realized something is VERY wrong.

You see I had cut out the cutaway shape before bracing on the bandsaw, but when I took the back to the box I realized had cut out the cutaway on the wrong side!!!

So now the back obviously would not close the box, because there's a big hole where the upper bout is. Now all I can do is glue a matching piece of wood to the cutout area, and try my hand at inlaying to hide that defect...

There's a better way! Just chisel all the braces off, and rebrace from the other side :)

Which would leave a bigger mess and not to mention having to sand the back level, which will make it too thin.

What mess? You should be able to do it without making the back thinner, unless there is something else the matter with it. Chiseling off the braces, the seam reinforcement and cleaning up the glue should only take minutes, putting new ones on the other side isn't that time consuming either. Yes, you could glue the cutoff back on, reinforce it from the inside, and then do some fancy inlay to hide it, but that would just be too doofus...

I agree. This is fixable. And if the back ends up a hair thinner? No big deal.

I'm in total agreement! That is; 1- you are in the running for Doofus of the month, and 2 - the fix should not be that hard.

Done, removed the brace and planed the backstrip off. There was a gouge near the top of the back but it looks like I can sand everything level without making the back too thin.

+ 1 on the suggestion it should be easy enough to fix , and yes you are currently in the lead for Feb :D The only question I would have is the seam inlay if you rout it again from the other side is that going to be a problem . No one has mentioned it yet so maybe not idunno

It's not an inlay, but it's glued in between the 2 halves of the back, so its visible on both sides...

If it's glued well, it shouldn't be a problem, particularly if the reinforcement strip is wide enough to cover the area.

You made the right choice by deciding to flip and rebrace. I'm sure that Wud is proud knowing his doofus concept has saved another error (as he intended).

That taught me next time, do not cut out the cutaways on any plates in the future, as things like this could happen unintentionally!

Seriously though cutaways really do introduce so many more chances for error...

Oh no, I just see you have not reported yet having re-braced the back. So the lefty version (theoretically) is still in the game (without repeating the procedure)... :lol: [uncle]

It's too late now,
but you could have made that a new design,
braces on the outside.
