Do any of you buy plastic in laminated sheets then rip it down into binding? If so do you just do it on the table saw or do you use some kind of veneer/laminate slitter? I priced sheets of ABS plastic laminated .020" W/ .020" B and it was only like $45 for a 24.25" X 48.5" sheet. Seems to me the TS would definately waste a lot of your material. This is a laminate slitter that I found http://www.amazon.com/Virutex-C015L-Por ... B000071NUW

On the benedetto dvd.I think he mentioned delmar as a dealer for plastic sheets. What abt using a fine blade o clearance fence on a bandsaw and ripping to width, you will still have to flatten 1 edge with a plane or ?? others use a 6by 48 sander.

Hi Jason,

The place to get sheets of ABS (cheap) is Leathertone

I use a table saw to saw up the sheets-even though you lose a lot to saw kerf, it is still ridiculously cheap compared to buying already cut strips.

You can order them any way you want by the whole sheet. I typically (used to) buy 4 ply B/.020/W.020/B.020/W.020 sheets and slice-em up into purfling and buy white .090 sheets for binding.

The other advantage is that the sheets are flat,as opposed to rolled so they are easier to work with.

Hope this helps.

Ernie,
Delmar only sells celuloid nitrate material. They have a very high dollar min. order.

The ability to make what you need is a tremendous advantage, both from a cost perspective as well as availability. With commercial suppliers, you only have so many options - although admittedly, Stewmac has wonderful laminate and trimming tools to make practically size and combination.

I rigged up a 1/4" pneumatic die grinder with a carbide jewelers saw blade to strip the ABS sheets.
This is mounted to a ball bearing linear rail with about 48" of travel and in turn mounted to the edge of an MDF sheet.
Adjustable stops set the binding width.
This rig is stored along the wall and then set on the table saw for use.
The saw blade leaves a cut surface ready for binding. The shavings fly all over the place making a mess.
