I'm getting ready to purchase a spray finishing getup for my acoustic guitars. I've decided to go HVLP. I'm deciding between the Apollo 1035 and the Earlex HV6900. The earlex is cheaper but looks adequate, the Apollo is twice the cash, but looks more powerful and seems to offer greater control at the gun. I plan on doing laquer, not polyester or anything while Moe still wants to do my electrics. Any thoughts? Any better machines? The Apollo is about at the limit of what I want to spend on the gun and turbine combo. |

I love my Fuji with the pressurized gravity feed. I know you did not mention that as a choice, but I really like it. I had a cheap Campell H HVLP then bought a big Ingersall Rand compressor and a nice G feed finally the FUJI. I love my Fuji, easy to tear down and clean, etc..... I shoot Nitro and Shellac. |

I've used an Apollo unit for years in the cabinet shop with few complaints. Spare parts and customer service have been excellent. Any single fan unit should push nitro lacquer easily, the extra power is needed to push modern high solids stuff like conversion varnishes. One thing to watch for on lower cost units is the type of air bleed, those that use a bleeder gun where air constantly comes out the cap can be tricky to use without constantly kicking up a dust cloud in the booth. so make sure the air bleed is at the unit and the gun has a conventional two stage trigger. |

FWIW I got a Fuji setup from this guy http://www.phelpsrefinishing.com/fuji.html I called & spoke with an actual person who answered all my questions and shipped the same day. I don't know if they still make them, but I have used the Wagner 4 turbine and no problems about 8 years. I have one never used. I bought them from a business that was going to spray tans on people, but they were to much for that. Spray guitars pretty well though. But I am going to a compressor setup once I can get a building for a new shop and spray room. Or rent time from someone. I also bought a Fuji 4 system from Phelps Refinishing. They had the best price, and everything was in stock. I think I even got an additional $100 off by buying a system that had gotten scratched on the outside of the turbine box. Very nice system!! |

I just ordered the mini-mite 4 with the gravity XPC gun from Phelps. Can't wait! I was also considering going with a compressor setup in case I decided to try my hand at the catalyzed polester finishes, but I thought about it and decided that I really didn't want to mess with polyester ever myself. |
