I'm getting ready to purchase a spray finishing getup for my acoustic guitars. I've decided to go HVLP.
I'm deciding between the Apollo 1035 and the Earlex HV6900.
The earlex is cheaper but looks adequate, the Apollo is twice the cash, but looks more powerful and seems to offer greater control at the gun.
I plan on doing laquer, not polyester or anything while Moe still wants to do my electrics.
Any thoughts?
Any better machines?
The Apollo is about at the limit of what I want to spend on the gun and turbine combo.

I love my Fuji with the pressurized gravity feed. I know you did not mention that as a choice, but I really like it. I had a cheap Campell H HVLP then bought a big Ingersall Rand compressor and a nice G feed finally the FUJI. I love my Fuji, easy to tear down and clean, etc..... I shoot Nitro and Shellac.

I've used an Apollo unit for years in the cabinet shop with few complaints. Spare parts and customer service have been excellent. Any single fan unit should push nitro lacquer easily, the extra power is needed to push modern high solids stuff like conversion varnishes. One thing to watch for on lower cost units is the type of air bleed, those that use a bleeder gun where air constantly comes out the cap can be tricky to use without constantly kicking up a dust cloud in the booth. so make sure the air bleed is at the unit and the gun has a conventional two stage trigger.

FWIW I got a Fuji setup from this guy
http://www.phelpsrefinishing.com/fuji.html

I called & spoke with an actual person who answered all my questions and shipped the same day. Not very common these days especially considering that he didn't charge more than any of the other online retailers.

Fuji ...if I were going to drop $1000 on an HVLP, I'd def go Fuji Mini-Mite 4 with the XPC gun (convertible to gravity feed as well) for under $700, or the Q4 Pro for about $920....both can be had on Amazon without paying Woodcraft's retail pricing. The difference between the Mini-Mite sprayers and the Q series is just additional soundproofing around the turbine - same non-bleeder, stainless guns, hoses, etc.

FWIW, almost all turbine sprayers use the same two turbines...the Ametek-Lamb 3 and 4 stage units, so the differences between the sprayers is in the guns, hoses, and the system used to control the volume of air reaching the gun. I prefer the Fuji guns to other turbine units - available in gravity feed, they have the same fan width control adjustments as conventional and conversion guns, are all stainless in the fluid path, and use the same high quality hoses and composite handles (no having to wear gloves during long spraying sessions..

In terms of specific recommendations:

#1: (Moderate price 4 stage system...$800) Super 4 Gold with XPC Gravity Feed Gun

http://www.amazon.com/Fuji-2809-G-XPC-Super-System-Gravity/dp/B002Z7EM6O/ref=sr_1_15?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1327236032&sr=1-15

Upgraded soundproofing versus baseline MM4; same turbine, gun, hose, etc. as Q4 Gold

#2: (Higher Price 4 stage system for better noise reduction...$920) Q4 Gold with XPC Gravity Feed Gun

http://www.amazon.com/Fuji-2894-G-XPC-Paint-System-Gravity/dp/B002Z7EM78/ref=sr_1_14?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1327236032&sr=1-14

#3: (Budget 3-stage system...$550) MM3 with XPC Gravity Feed Gun

http://www.amazon.com/Fuji-2803-G-XPC-Mini-Mite-System-Gravity/dp/B002Z7EM5U/ref=sr_1_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1327236032&sr=1-1

The MM series has the same turbine, gun, and hose as the more expensive Super and Q Pro/Gold series, but less soundproofing. The three stage units will handle everything that guitar builders need to spray.

Let me state again - even the $550 Fuji sprayers have the XPC non-bleeder gun, quality hose, high quality turbine, etc. - the differences are solely in the degree of soundproofing and the turbine packaging. If you can tolerate a little higher sound pressure level when spraying, and you don;t need to shoot latex paint, heavy primers, or other thicker paints, get the MM3 for $550 (about half the cost of the Apollo 1035) and spend the rest of your finishing dollars on a decent airbrush and a good conversion touch-up gun like the Iwata or the SATA for bursts.

One of the things I liked about the Apollo gun was the ability to spray from most angles (provided the cup holds sufficient material). Is there a fuji gun available that does the same thing?

How does this system compare: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Fuji-Mini-M ... 644wt_1270

Actually that gravity gun looks much cooler. How fine is the spray?

I don't know if they still make them, but I have used the Wagner 4 turbine and no problems about 8 years. I have one never used. I bought them from a business that was going to spray tans on people, but they were to much for that. Spray guitars pretty well though. But I am going to a compressor setup once I can get a building for a new shop and spray room. Or rent time from someone. The garage isn't working out and I hear about it from the big boss inside the house.

I also bought a Fuji 4 system from Phelps Refinishing. They had the
best price, and everything was in stock. I think I even got an additional
$100 off by buying a system that had gotten scratched on the outside
of the turbine box. Very nice system!!

I just ordered the mini-mite 4 with the gravity XPC gun from Phelps. Can't wait! I was also considering going with a compressor setup in case I decided to try my hand at the catalyzed polester finishes, but I thought about it and decided that I really didn't want to mess with polyester ever myself.
