Somewhere along the line, I needed a quick guitar pattern for something. So I freehanded it, used it and threw it in the scrap bin. It rose to the top of the pile at some point and I decided I liked it. The white spruce top was a quick build to be used for a chladni pattern demonstration for some high school physics kids. Then I found a piece of Padauk at a local lumber yard that I couldn't refuse. Thus, the modern Terz guitar has been born. Everything so far has been pretty non-remarkable other than the fact that all tools are working properly, all molds, bending blanket and binding machine all performed flawlessley and the binding went on without a single swear word being uttered (other than when I superglued the top to the workbench but that was quickly remedied without major catastrophe.) The laminated neck block is already glued up from the same chunk of padauk. Here's a couple photos. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Tight bend there in that upper bout, and Padauk isn't that easy to coax into shapes like that. Me hat's off to you! And your heating blanket... Steve |

Padauk smells like Play-Doh to me. I picked up a piece the other day to make a drop top for a bass for the challenge build. Going to be a pretty little guitar Dave. Darrin |

Guys, guys, guys...shame! Padauk is absolutely wonderful stuff. It smells heavenly. It rings like a bell. It's red. Sure, it can be hard to bend. Sure it stains your clothes permanenetly. Sure it bleeds all over your purflings & light bindings. But ah, it's great stuff! So show some love... Steve |

Thanks Steve. So far, this stuff rings louder and better than any other wood I've ever worked with. The smell isn't worse than anything I've worked with either. This is all around a fun little build. |

| Post subject: | White Spruce Padauk modern Terz - Progress |
Here's a couple progress pics. The pictures show the sides have been pore filled (egg white) and the back is ready for pore fill. Neck hasn't been touched with shellac or egg white yet but should match perfectly. Had to make my own truss rod ala Cumpiano for this little neck. That didn't go too badly. Just followed the (updated) directions from the book. The slots in the headstock turned out great. First time I've used a router for this task. Actually used a router bit chucked into the drill press mode of my Shopsmith. I could really learn to like working with this Padauk. Rings like a bell. Bends sweetly. Color is something out of the ordinary. I'm liking it. ![]()

I just finished one with padauk and Shane's lutz, and I and the new owner love it. It ended up being a beautiful brick red kind of colour. |
