Post subject:  Redwood over Mahogany 00

I just officially finished (the case showed up so I can call it done) this mahogany/redwood 00. The Redwood was salvaged from a Californian hot tub and the Mahogany was rescued from Martin's dumpster when I was at Martinfest over the summer. The neck was also from Martin, as were the mini button ebony schallers and tortoise binding. Fingerboard and bridge are ebony and the finish is nitro. Opinions welcome :D

Your finish looks like it came out great! Nice guitar Brian!

I agree Brian, you are definitely showing a lot of improvement on each guitar.

The top is great. I hope you have more of this to work with. I also agree with Filippo about the neck and heel. And to add to that, I'd like to see you step up your game on the end wedge treatment and refine your purflings and miters a bit.

Overall I think it's a really nice looking guitar. It looks like a keeper!

Edit: To clarify, I think the end wedge and heel cap just look a bit out of place (mismatched?). Just a little more care in wood selection there, and paying attention to lining up the heel cap/heel line with the binding line, and mitering your purflings at the end wedge and this would be spectacular.

I am in agreement with Jim and Filippo. The heel is clunky and the head plate and heel button, being of maple, are out of place.

For your situation in building, these are NOT deal breakers! Good job on getting this done. However, if you have the stomach for it, I'd suggest re-doing them. At the least, work a photo of the guitar in Photoshop and see what you think.

Hey, nice guitar! What # is it?

I'll say like others:

Good:
beautiful shape, stunning top, well matched with back and sides, cool rosette, and sure it sounds great!

Less good:
The maple is out of place. (It is not UGLY, that's OK. It just could have been matched better.) The heel is a little massive and square, could have more curve. The bridge could be cleaned and polished a bit more, and you don't need that long saddle (but you could have it larger).

I would say don't change a thing, and go for another one. And meanwhile, have fun playing it!

Francis
