Post subject:  New Archtop Underway

I wanted to share my new archtop I’ve started. It is going to be "Irish" themed with a green lacquer finish for my daughters high schools fund raiser auction. The top is Sitka Spruce and the back/sides are flamed Maple. The top and back just need a little more sanding and they are done. I hope have sides bent and body closed during my holiday vacation next week. Would a side sound port be of any benifit with the hole design I have on the top?

That is going to be a beautiful guitar. I'm very excited to see it come along.

I know that playing with the f-holes on an archtop can have a significant influence on sound, and I will be eager to hear how the offset clovers influence the sound.

Very cool. Gonna call it the "Danny Boy Special"?

Yep, looking forward to seeing it finished....coming along great so far!
You seem to have lots of effective area in the soundholes already (though you'd have to calculate).... I might be inclined to PM Alan Carruth & ask if he'd put in a soundport if it were his.

I don't know about soundports, either. If you've seen "The Blue Guitar", you already know that Benedetto made a leaf motif soundport in the guitar he built, and his top soundholes were offset similar to yours. I'm sure it would look cool as all get-out but I've never played a sound ported guitar so I have no idea what sort of influence it would have on the overall sound. Maybe you can figure out how to make a sliding door for the sound port, as several luthiers have done. Follow Dave's advice on this issue. It's a very nice looking guitar thus far and I'm eager to see it finished, too. I hope it raises LOTS for money for the fund raising project. You're an excellent and very creative dad!
