I launched a new web site, one for information, not for profit - a hopefully objective look at a sometimes subjective subject. Check it out. It's pretty comprehensive and I hope it assists those who can use it. Feel free to link to it. Feel free to send me your comments and suggestions on how to improve it, more accurate, better photos, your experiences... there's ample room for improvement.

(Sorry, I don't know how to do links. You may have to copy and paste it into your browser)

Very nice, you've put a lot of work into this.
I don't know much about building web pages but would it be possible to create a link from the list of woods directly to the description?

Tonewood Data Source

If you put your cursor over the URL button on the reply page it explains and shows you the parameters for setting up links in the grey bar right above the text entry field.

This is a fantastic resource especially for those of us who are new to building guitars. Thanks for putting this together!

Nicely Done! ...a good resource. I noticed some conflicting information in the section on Bubinga. I have some that I plan to use in the future. It has some, but not a whole lot of figure. Is it easy or challenging to bend?

Bubinga Guibourtia demeusei, often called “African Rosewood”, but not a true rosewood.
This is a wonderful wood in every respect. It is as hard as the rosewoods, but has a finer texture with no pores to fill. It bends easily (some disagree, especially with the more wildly figured wood) and holds its' shape. The brownish-purple color is close enough to rosewood to look familiar. To top it off, it is red brown with a clearly demarcated lighter brown to white sapwood. It is a hard, durable wood with an interlocked grain which can make bending challenging.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing, Roland. Welcome to the forum!

BTW...I met Roland at Woodstock and suggested that he stop by and present his database. I was really impressed not only with the data but also with the effort he took to assemble it and the generosity he has shown to share it.

Thanks again and welcome!!!

Steve...I've bent plain and highly figured Bubinga with no problems. Keep in slightly misted before bending if it's plain. If it's highly figured, use Super Soft 2 (grain relaxer) 24 hours in advance of bending. In both cases, about 300* F seems to be a good bending temp. Good luck.

Thanks for this incredible resource. I printed off the articles and the wood guide as I can use it to read during downtime with out sitting at the PC or staring at my phone.

Thanks again !!

Jj,
Nice input. If Roland would accept and add advise from experienced builders it would make a nice addition.

Good job Roland,

Hutch
