It's a bad deal but we can't get the stuff in the shiny can here in CA anymore. Does anyone know if it can be had in Nevada and what kind of criminal I will be if I bring back less than an ounce.....I mean a couple of gallons next time I go to Reno? Someone said lighter fluid can be used the same way to wipe up dust and see what things are going to look like. Anyone know about that? |

As far as I am aware lighter fluid and naphtha are one and the same. Here in AU it is sold as "Shellite", other places its called 'white gas' or even 'white spirit' and a heap of other names but its all the same stuff...naphtha = lighter fluid. Cheers Kim |

Not sure about other parts of the world, but in the UK "white spirit" is totally different from naphtha. Here, "white spirit" is just another name for conventional paint thinner. EDIT: "white spirit" (UK) = " mineral spirit" (US) |

Kim, here in the states Naphtha = white gas= camp stove fuel. Lighter fluid for a cigarette lighter can be butane or white gas or for barbeque a aliphatic petroleum distillate of some kind. L. |

this naphta thing also puzzles me a bit: it´s a brand name for a particular distillation fraction of oil (a mixture of mostly aliphatic hydrocarbons), right ? nothing to do with naphthalene (i presume), which is an aromatic organic compound (two benzene rings sticked together, basically). please let me know if i´m wrong. cheers, miguel. |

I thought white gas was different from naptha, but I was wrong. I just went out to my toxic waste pile, and was going to dispose of the Coleman white gas I have, took a whiff of it, and it smells a little different from my Ace naptha, but very similar. Guess I will keep it! It says on the label contains naptha petroleum. Mineral spirits are on the way out too, so stock up if you need it. Be careful, and don't buy the Kleen Kut thinner. I ruined a brush after cleaning it with this stuff. |

I live in California and just bought Naptha yesterday. I wonder if the rules are different county to county or if what I got off the shelf is the last of it. |

I made many many phone calls and finally found some. They said when that was gone that was to be the end of it. I live in Sonoma County north of San Francisco. I read you can't find in in Southern California. So I do think it is state wide. |

you have 10 million people in LA county driving gasoline cars, wrecking yards spilling toxins into the soil & they outlaw Naptha? Good Job!

Thats 28 million people. I live in San Diego no dice on the naptha. Is there an alternative that would work just as well? I guess I should be looking for camp stove fuel or lighter fluid. They have some sort of replacement for naptha on the shelf now which says its three chemical in one. Does anyone know if it will work the same? here is a link: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R ... ogId=10053 it says its Industrial Maintenance Coating Thinner. |

Naphtha ( /ˈnæfθə/ or /ˈnæpθə/) normally refers to a number of flammable liquid mixtures of hydrocarbons, i.e., a component of natural gas condensate or a distillation product from petroleum, coal tar or peat boiling in a certain range and containing certain hydrocarbons. It is a broad term covering among the lightest and most volatile fractions of the liquid hydrocarbons in petroleum. Naphtha is a colorless to reddish-brown volatile aromatic liquid, very similar to gasoline. |

Coleman camp-stove or lantern fuel is probably a close second. |

If you don't mind me asking...what do you use naptha for? Are you trying to speed up a dry time? |

I use low odor mineral spirits in place of naptha. Yes, naptha is not the same thing as napthalene. |

Pa protects me from Grain alcohol. So, when I French Polish I have to buy poisoned alcohol in its place. I tried local Moonshine to melt my shellac. First application the guitar went nuts and jumped out the window. |
