The Axehandle dishes are made from a single 3/4" MDF sheet, this will warp over time even if sealed (I know, my first dishes were 3/4" MDF sealed and they warped) so you're getting what you pay for.

Shane at High Mountain sells 1-1/2" thick dishes and you could get one that is double sided (one radius on one side, another on the other...) to save some cost.

Highmountains are the best!
Spend the extra & forget about problems with them down the road!

SHEEELAC!!!!

If you do buy the thin ones then back them with a good plywood 3/4" at least!
But the time & cost of this will be more than what you would pay to Highmountain.

I got mine from Tracey at Luthiers Suppliers (olf sponsor)

Not sure why, but my homemade 3/4" dishes are as true as the day they were made. Using a different batch of MDF, we trashed a couple before we got a keeper for Chris V.

FWIW, I like the 1" dishes that John Hall is selling - very nice.

What do you think of the dish LMI sells? I am getting one from them because I can combine it with a bunch of other stuff I need, rather than say Luthier Supplier (who makes very good dish) where I pay the high postage, and again when I order from someone else...

I have no experience with the LMI dishes, but the online catalog indicates that they are made from 5/8" low density fiberboard (lighter than medium density), and should be mounted on a backer for use. The plus side of this is that you pay less for shipping the lighter dish, but the minus is that the dish needs work before use. I'm guessing that two lightweight dishes would weigh about what a single 1" or 1-1/4" MDF dish would weigh, so might make sense to buy 18mm MDF locally and epoxy the LMI dishes to the MDF to beef it up.

Even when I had the Luthier Supplier's Exteria dish, I had to glue them to a plywood backer board...

I don't see how it's any different with this...
