Post subject:  determining the type of glue used in previous repairs

Hi

I just got a job to fix a Gibson SJ-300.

It has the classic crack at the nut end which seems so common for Gibson instruments... I asked if it had been repaired before and he said yes, but for some reason the glue had failed, with no wood damage.

I am wondering how can I determine the type of glue that was used in the previous repair, because I want to know why a glue joint would separate. I would like to think he probably used regular white glue, but I don't know...

Update: Actually, upon further examination, I realized that the glue did not fail, but it was in fact a new break elsewhere in the joint, it was just so close to the original break that it looked as though the glue had failed.

If the original glue didn't fail, no reason to unglue it. Just glue the new break. Seems like that guitar is living a hard life!
