Do I need a barrier of shellac between a Zpoxy pore fill and a Tru Oil finish? I'm looking forward to trying out a rubbed finish - tired of spraying. Thanks. |

Corky: I've used polymerized tung oil over zpoxy without a barrier coat and results were not good. Surface got rough and fuzzy like after a period of use. Suspect True_Oil may be the same,a good shellac barrier coat should do the trick.Lets see what other folks say. Tom |

Ive done 1 true oil finish and what i read before hand was that true oil over zpoxy was bad idea , so i didnt try it . I will say that without some type filler the true oil finish will show all the pores , it will not fill them . |

I've used Tru-Oil over 3 guitars with no problem... Tru-Oil may not be as durable as other finishes but it does work as a fairly decent finish... I put 50/50 Zpoxy/alcohol on the soundboard to seal before the TO. It gives it a toner type color. These days I prefer not to have that color... Steve |

Corky, I use Tru-Oil over both Zpoxy and Marinepoxy for my necks. I've had no problems. |

Thanks, all. I also sent a note to Robby O'Brien - his tutorial on Tru Oil is great - Robbie sees no issues with Tru Oil on top of Zpoxy. I'll keep soldiering on. |

Tru Oil directly over Z Poxy on a neck has gotten fuzzy after a few months every time I tried it. (no shellac barrier coat). I now use a solvent based filler with no problem. |

I've done that on 2 guitar necks. both had to be redone because of the fuzziness. |

When using Tru Oil on open pored wood, I've had good luck filling pores by putting on some Tru Oil, sanding the wood with 400 grit paper (with the Tru Oil wet) and building up a slurry that I work into the pores. I do this in little areas at a time. Works a little like pumicing in French Polish. Then I continue to apply Tru Oil on top of the filled wood. It's worked very well for me--a little more elbow grease involved than squeegying in epoxy, but seems a little less toxic too. Dave |

Sounds to me it's just another instance of the amine blush problem, which has been covered here recently, with many posts esp. from Mike O'Melia. Sometimes epoxy fuzzes thru finishes, sometimes not. It seems--but this may be wrong--that the people who have no trouble mix and apply the epoxy in environments where the relative humidity is low, around 40%. |
