I like to call tops like that 'Interesting'... which I tend to favor for many applications, over the 'not-so-interesting' tops.

I know it may be a face only a mother could love, but I do like tops like that!

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I love the rosette. Are you going to put any color in the top or leave it natural?

I bet that top would look great with a touch of color. A light amber dye job would really make it an eye popper

Just because it doesn't look like poundcake doesn't mean it's ugly.

It's wood.

Alan-

I've got a few "ugly" Sitka tops with reddish color, uneven grain, dark grain, and funky jagged bearclaw. I like those tops the most from my stash.

That guitar is going to end up really nice - I especially like the birdseye maple rosette against the bearclaw top. That feature works beautifully. Post more pics please.

Thanks-

Thanks for the kind words!
I found this plank of Sitka at Mac Beaths hdwd in Berserkly CA.
I lucked out, because it had almost no runout,
and the bearclaw was a big plus.
I've made a couple of gits out of it,
and they sound great.
The red didn't show in the other gits,
because I used water based finish.
This one is Old Masters varnish as a base, amber f p over that.
The flecks are amazing.
My wife just got a good camera, and is figuring out how to use it,
so I'll get some good pics when it's "strung up".
