Those long protrusions can interefere with the formation of the longest wave sructures and cause phase cancellation in the lowest frequencies, resulting in a "tinny" sound. I'd trim them for sure.............................NOT!!!! (I'm such a BSer!  )

Since I've been setting up my bridges before the back goes on, (much easier!), I noticed how much extra there is. I'm thinkin' it's just dead weight, and as long as they're as long as the ball, should be fine. Oh, don't joke around so much.

I have a guy who's commisioning an instrument with the Maton pickup system, so I'm going to have to set the bridge up on that one before I put the back on it, in order to install the system the way they have it on their factory guitars. |

Hi Alan, many years ago I was given a set of the "original" brass bridge pins for my D-28; they were considerably shorter than the Martin stock pins. The shorter ones were a constant problem; it was hit or miss whether you got the ball ends next to the pin where they belong or the ball ends were still kind of hanging over the end of the pin. I could usually fuss with them enough to get them seated properly (but not always), but I hated them and eventually threw them out. So I think part of the "extra" length is intended to facilitate the proper installation of the strings. I hope this makes sense...  pvg |

Well....Laurent says yes so I'd defer to him...but it'd be interesting to hear why he said that. My first ignorant thought would be to trim them to the point that guaranteed their function but didn't look "unconsidered" ...which is how they look to me now. On the other hand, you'd need a mirror to see them inside a finished guitar. So, who's going to see that and what are the odds of it reflecting poorly on you as a builder? Answer: Not too many and not much. Finally...Kevin Ryan might not only trim them...but he might put a decorative cap on them....with inlays....so when you change strings for the first time after you've had your new guitar for a month...you'd get one more pleasurable affirmation of his level of craftsmanship. Ok...joking...I have no idea what he does with pins. I'm just saying it's up to you how far you go with considerations of craftsmanship. |

He offers titanium bridge pins for sale on his AST website - with or without the pearl dot! (approx $120 per set of 6 with the pearl the last time I checked). But beautiful craftsmanship none the less.  I wonder why I didn't think of that first..... |
