Do the same step on each one, then move to the next step. I've never done it this way before, not sure it is best, but here I am.

I hear ya! I had one experience with batch building. There are advantages and some disadvantages. Your results look great! |

Yeah, they are all different sizes, Size-2, Size-1, 00, Grand Concert (000) Doug, how did the guitar with the Tournevoz come out? Tone? |

I typically do two at a time as well but that seems easy compared to that. I simply don't have the room do to 6 or more at a time. BUt it makes sense, if your all set up to build necks then you may as well do a few. |

They look great, David! Over the last couple of years (as a 'professional' guitar maker) I have experimented with building different size batches of instruments, pairs or triplets of almost identical instruments, speed building a single instrument etc., to see what I liked best. I now make one or two at them most, even if it takes longer. I think some building tasks become awfully tedious and repetetive if I do more at a time, and it begins to feel a lot like work...

4 guitars + the ukes are too many to do at once. I have a very small shop, and up till now 3 was the most I'd done at once, and I think 2 is probably ideal. If it weren't that my "slots unit" will hold 8 bodies plus necks & parts, I would be doing damage to them. I actually planned to have 4 guitars in successive stages, with first in, first out, but it became so confusing figuring out the day's work, I let the first 2 lag until the other 2 caught up (and when the ukes came in from left field) it became easier to do each step to all 6, and then move to the next step. I thought I was so smart & efficient. I did all the routing for bindings in 1 day and thought I would glue all the purfling & binding in a "couple" of days. For various reasons, it turned into a "couple" of weeks! It has been a real education, this full time building, and I wouldn't miss it for the world. |

So I was wondering, when doing guitar building full time as a job, how can I manage 10 guitars a year if building only two at a time? I know my last build took about 4 months... |

You make your process more efficient. That's been at the forefront of my mind lately. That's all I can figure is that you streamline everything to the nth degree. As my skills improve, the various stages become more fluid and automatic, like neck carving. It's pretty cool how quickly you can move through all the steps of making a neck once you become familiar with the proper techniques, and just as important, the right tools and jigs. I'm just now realizing the power of this, mind you, but I do see the benefits for sure. Ken |

I like to do two at a time simply because as the glue is drying on one thing you need something else to do. And if I set up my band saw to resaw backs and sides or necks or what ever I'll just do that all day. I'll make a bunch of necks, join a bunch of tops and backs, cut fretboards etc... Then you have a bunch of roughed out parts for your builds. Makes it go much more smoothly when all you have to do is reach up to a shelf and grab a half finished neck. |

On my last build I was doing it as a hobby, so it took four months simply because of that. I think I'll make days for resawing (if necessary), days for making neck blanks, etc. but when I start I also have to balance it out with repair work. It depends on where it's going though, because I am not sure if I am likely to get more repair work than commissions. I suppose if I was swamped with one or the other then that takes priority. |

I just got done batch building 5 guitars and didn't enjoy it as much as doing 2. Two or three at the most for me in the future, however i will process my lumber in batches as it's better for less machine set-up that way. |

I've built two in this manner and am entranced by this kind of guitar. It may not be for everyone, but it appeals to me. I will be building more! Its my go-to guitar. I love the sound and it is so easy to play. It literally seems to jump into my hands and music pours out. (If you can call what I play "music"!) And seeing as you asked, and it IS your thread... Its difficult to describe the tone so I will have to use metaphors. Its like dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate, well brewed coffee over a cheap cup, good ice cream over the supermarket brands, good wine over the house brand.
