Post subject: | Binding/purfling question |
I've got the purfling in for the top. Looks good. Broke the binding for the back after using CA to attach B/W strip to the maple binding. Most of the B/W strip peeled off of the binding while bending. So now I have to make more ebony/maple veneer strips try again. I'm frustrated as hell though. Am I wrong to think that laminating the B/W strips to the binding and then bending is the right way to go? Or am I just using the wrong glue? Or should I be approaching this another way? I'm uber-frustrated and I have limited time. I really want to finish this build before I have to move. I cannot take my shop to Alaska and I find myself rushing to finish something that cannot be rushed. StReSs ![]() Any help is appreciated. |

Are you putting the purfling edges next to each other and taping all the binding tightly together before bending? That will help prevent delamination. Leave it in the bender until completely cooled. Also, are you really using ebony for a black line? Fiber or black dyed veneer bends easier (not to mention cheaper). I'd probably avoid CA on maple too, especially flamed maple. It can soak into the grain and stain. I use titebond original. |

Hi fingerstyle, I glue the purflings with the titebond wood glue II, which is water resistant. When I bend the bindings with glued purflings, everything stays in its place, I didn't have any problem. I agree with Kent about making purflings with a black dyed veneer strip, it bends easier than real ebony. |

I have bent dozens (hundreds ?) of strips glued up with titebond 1, and wet them when being bent in the bender, rarely any issues .. taped tight is the solution. |
