How much paint do you route off under the FB Ext. before gluing? |

I go down to bare wood. Or at least I used to before I built with floating extensions. |

Of course down to bare wood, but the whole area underneath the tongue, or just around the edges? |

Sorry I misunderstood your question. I used to do the whole area but only glue around the edges. Since you don't need a lot of strength there and you want it to come apart if needed, I don't see a problem with only routing around the edges but I've never done it that way. If I were to do it that way, I'd leave a lip of finish under the edges to make it even easier to get a knife under there if it ever needs to come off. |

I concur with Kent and think the less width of fingerboard glued the less chance of cracks in the top due to different rates of shrinkage between the board and top. As an aside I've been experimenting with not gluing the extension at all . Have a guitar here at the house built in 2005 that has not been glued and is none the worst for not gluing. Tom |

I don't glue my extentions to the top plate but still leave the whole area under the board unfinished. My necks are bolt-ons and can be removed at will without any trouble. It also eliminates fretboard movement and cracked top plate problems. I mask it off when finishing along with the bridge area. |
